Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults over 50, yet many people don’t recognize the early signs. AMD affects the macula—the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision used for reading, driving, and recognizing faces.

There are two main types of AMD: dry and wet. Dry AMD is more common and typically progresses slowly, while wet AMD is less common but more aggressive and can cause sudden vision changes. Early symptoms may include blurred or distorted central vision, difficulty seeing in low light, or straight lines appearing wavy. Because symptoms can be subtle at first, routine eye exams are critical.

The good news is that early detection makes a real difference. While there is no cure for AMD, today’s treatments and lifestyle recommendations can slow progression and help preserve vision. This includes nutritional support, managing underlying health conditions, and in some cases, advanced medical treatment.

At Sigma Eyehealth Centers, we use comprehensive eye exams and advanced imaging technology to detect AMD early—sometimes before noticeable symptoms appear. This February, we encourage patients over 50 or those with a family history of macular degeneration to schedule an eye exam and take a proactive step toward protecting their vision.
